In a corner of a worn-out tent in Deir al-Balah, in the heart of the Gaza Strip, Fatima (39) struggled to provide the bare minimum of safety for her four daughters after a painful journey of escaping death amid the horrors of war.
“We fled under bombardment,” Fatima recounts, her voice filled with sorrow. “We left Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza and ran on foot. There was no time to take anything. I just carried my daughters and walked through streets full of rubble and bodies.”
Her destination was unknown — danger seemed to surround them everywhere.
After long days of displacement and exhaustion, she decided to build a small makeshift tent from wood scraps and old clothes.
“That tent was all I had,” she says. “It didn’t protect us from rain or cold — but at least, we were together.”
Months later, the fragile tent collapsed completely, leaving Fatima and her daughters homeless once again. In one of their darkest moments, a team from Al-Khair Foundation arrived to help. The team visited her shelter, assessed the situation, and offered immediate support.
“I couldn’t believe they cared about us,” Fatima says softly. “But they didn’t ignore us. They brought food, blankets, and moved us to a safer shelter. For the first time, I felt someone truly heard us.”
Today, Fatima and her daughters live in Al-Khair Shelter Camp, which provides them with clean water, food, and basic necessities. Although the signs of displacement still weigh heavily on her face, she finally feels a sense of security.
“Nothing can replace what we lost,” she reflects, “but at least I have hope that my daughters will have a better life.”
According to humanitarian reports, nearly two million people in Gaza have been displaced by the war — thousands of them living in dire conditions without proper shelter or essential needs. Yet, stories like Fatima’s stand as a testament that hope can rise from the heart of suffering, and that even in destruction, life can begin anew.
