Al-Khair Foundation (AKF), in partnership with Manhal Specialty Hospital (MSH), proposes a comprehensive eye health outreach and surgical intervention project targeting internally displaced persons (IDPs), rural, and nomadic communities in the Maroodi-Jeex region of Somaliland.

The project aims to strengthen access to essential ophthalmic services, prevent avoidable blindness, and restore sight for vulnerable populations with limited access to tertiary healthcare.


Project Objectives:

  • Improve access to eye health services in IDP camps and rural communities.
  • Provide blindness prevention education and awareness.
  • Conduct OPD eye screening and treatment.
  • Refer and perform cataract and glaucoma surgeries for eligible patients.
  • Restore sight for at least 50 patients.

Implementation Strategy:

  • Deploy mobile eye screening teams to target communities.
  • Procure eye treatment drugs and essential supplies.
  • Provide transportation for patients requiring referral.
  • Conduct pre-operative screening and laboratory investigations.
  • Perform cataract and glaucoma surgeries at Manhal Specialty Hospital.
  • Ensure post-operative follow-up for one month.

Project Outputs:

  • 1,500 IDPs and villagers screened for eye conditions.
  • 3,000 individuals receive blindness prevention education.
  • 50 patients regain sight after successful surgeries.
