A safer space for families forced to leave their homes

In areas affected by conflict, disaster, and displacement, thousands of families may be forced to live in temporary camps after losing their homes or leaving them in search of safety.

Providing tents alone is not enough. Displaced families also need an organised and secure site with essential services such as water, sanitation facilities, lighting, hygiene services, and suitable spaces for children, women, older people, and people with disabilities.

When camps lack these facilities, the risk of illness and accidents increases, adding further hardship to families already living through extremely difficult conditions.

Through the Camp and Emergency Shelter Equipment Project, Al-Khair Foundation establishes and equips temporary accommodation sites for families displaced or affected by conflicts, disasters, and humanitarian crises across several countries and regions.

What Does the Project Include?

The facilities provided are determined according to the number of families, the nature of the location, and needs identified on the ground. The project may include:

  • Preparing suitable land for temporary camps.

  • Providing, installing, and securing tents.

  • Organising the placement of tents to allow safe movement and access.

  • Providing water tanks and distribution points.

  • Establishing temporary toilets and shower facilities.

  • Installing suitable sanitation and drainage systems.

  • Providing lighting throughout the camp and along walkways.

  • Installing insulation and protective coverings against rain, heat, and damp conditions.

  • Supplying mattresses, blankets, and pillows.

  • Creating safe spaces for children.

  • Providing suitable facilities for women, older people, and people with disabilities.

  • Establishing points for distributing food, water, and humanitarian assistance.

  • Setting up healthcare facilities or first-aid points where needed.

  • Maintaining camp facilities and replacing damaged equipment where possible.

Why Is Equipping Camps Important?

An unequipped camp can become an extremely harsh environment, particularly during winter, heavy rain, and periods of extreme heat.

A lack of clean water, toilets, and sanitation systems can contribute to the spread of disease. Poor lighting and unorganised spaces may also increase the risk of accidents and make movement difficult for children and older people at night.

Equipping camps helps organise daily life for displaced families and provides a basic level of safety, cleanliness, and privacy until they can return home or move into more stable accommodation.

Who Benefits from the Project?

The project supports families forced to live in camps or emergency shelters, including:

  • Families displaced by conflict and violence.

  • Refugees and people seeking protection.

  • People affected by earthquakes, floods, and natural disasters.

  • Families whose homes have been destroyed or made unsafe.

  • Women, children, and older people.

  • People with disabilities and those who are unwell.

  • Low-income families unable to secure alternative accommodation.

  • Communities affected by humanitarian emergencies.

Priority is given to families without access to safe shelter and to the most vulnerable people living in displacement areas.

How Is the Project Implemented?

Field teams and local partners assess the proposed camp location, the number of families, their needs, and the conditions of the surrounding area.

The land is then prepared, and tents, facilities, and essential services are provided. Living spaces, pathways, water points, and sanitation facilities are organised to create a safer and more suitable environment.

The camp continues to be monitored so that emerging needs can be identified, facilities can be maintained, and additional equipment can be provided as displacement levels and conditions change.

The Impact of Your Donation

Your contribution to the Camp and Emergency Shelter Equipment Project can help:

  • Provide a safer location for displaced families.

  • Protect families from living outdoors.

  • Provide water and essential hygiene facilities.

  • Reduce the spread of disease within camps.

  • Improve sleeping and living conditions.

  • Provide lighting and reduce the risk of accidents at night.

  • Protect the privacy of women and children.

  • Improve access to aid and essential services.

  • Support older people, patients, and people with disabilities.

  • Give families greater stability during displacement.

Your contribution could provide a tent for one family, a water tank for several households, or sanitation facilities that protect camp residents from disease and preserve their dignity.

Help Make Displacement Sites Safer

A camp cannot replace the home a family has lost, but it can provide an organised place that protects them from living outdoors and gives them access to essential services during a time of hardship.

Contribute today towards equipping camps and emergency shelters, and help displaced families live in safer, cleaner, and more dignified conditions.

Donate now and help equip a shelter that provides protection and stability for families affected by crisis.
